So I love my current mx5 (Kara) she is the most fun car I have ever had, small, light, nimble, all the good stuff, and for the age of her 1.6 engine, she isn’t exactly a slouch, indeed, she has surprised a few more powerful cars with her off the line nippiness and the way she just whips round corners that leave other cars scrabbling for their brakes. She isn’t standard looks wise, she’s dropped quite low, has a set of flared arches bolted onto her, nice mazdaspeed roll bar, GV lip, HSD coilovers and a set of 15×8 0et wheels. To my eyes she is gorgeous.
But there are a couple of flies in the ointment:-
first, bar a few cosmetic and servicing bits, she arrived to me in this configuration, this is a problem, I hate saying bought not built, it really grinds my gears.
Next, I want to boost her, some more power would kick ass, but she is a 1.6, and while the engine will take a whole lot of abuse and power, the drive train , especially the 1.6vLSD could do with beefing up to the stronger 1.8 items. Added to all that, there are a few signs of rust on her pretty little body. So what to do?
Improve Kara and throw a big bucket of cash at her, or start a whole new project? My preference would be to start something fresh, and make sure as much as possible that the shell is very sound. Decisions decisions. But as it happens (as so often it does) I kinda "fell into" the errrrrrr….. solution?
