I got tired of looking for a knocklite. Everyone of them that turned up was either more than i wanted to spend, or was sold 3.5 seconds before i contacted the seller and then they got discontinued, no biggy, as all the ones i was chasing were second handy anyway, but i started to look for alternatives.
So whats so great about knocklites? well they are great looking, with their lovely aluminium casing, they clearly show when you are getting knock, so you can back off, and get it sorted before blowing engine insides to the outsides. Added to that it also does a good job of being a shift light what is there not to love?
Well, ok, the knock response is still all manual, it shines a light, you stop pushing the loud pedal so hard.It would be far better for it to send a signal to the ECU to retard the timing to cut the knock out, and shine a pretty light. From some of the stuff i’ve been reading, it’s not the easiest task with a knocklite and a Megasquirt ECU.
So I went fishing for an alternative and as luck would have it ExtraEFI has started making a knock conditioning box, complete with signal to Megasquirt, and the ability to output to a remote LED. Ok, not as much shiney as the knocklite, but packing better functionality, and a lot cheaper. ok, no shift light, but the clocks i am planning on swapping into Bankruptcy does that anyway. So WIN.
So i ordered one over the weekend, and it turned up today, and here is the gratuitous just-pulled-out-of-the-packing-on-my-dining-room-table pic. complete with remote LED for mounting in my clock cluster.
